Online Workshop: Introduction to Data Analysis with R
Learn the Fundamentals of R: syntax and techniques for data analysis and graphics
Are you ready to learn R?
The open-source R statistics language is used by an estimated five million people.
R combines a powerful programming language, a comprehensive range of statistical functions, and outstanding graphics. And yes, it’s free.
But R uses command line input, and some people find that intimidating.
Even so, the reward for mastery of R is access to a large and rapidly growing range of abilities that applies to many areas of scientific, statistical, business, and other applications.
This three-session workshop will take you past the intimidation and into clarity. We will clearly illustrate how to perform professional-level data analysis and create superb graphics.
The workshop will get you starting using syntax which you can store, annotate, and adapt to suit your own analyses.
We will cover a wide range of topics, and there will be many opportunities to ask questions.
In this Workshop, you will learn:
This workshop will take place in three two-hour sessions. We will cover the following topics
Session 1
- A first R session: an overview
- Entering data
- Ranking, ordering, and aggregating data
- Creating simple plots: scatter and line plots
- Univariate descriptive statistics
Session 2
- Defining and working with missing data
- Important Operations and Getting Help in R
- Reading and writing data files
- Graphical methods (including scatterplots, bar charts, pie charts, histograms, box plots and dot charts)
- Customizing and creating more complex plots
Session 3
- Sub-setting and sorting data
- Introduction to Ordinary Least Squares Regression and Pearson correlation
- t-tests, Wilcoxon tests, and Binomial tests for comparing two groups
- Chi-square and Fisher’s Exact tests for two categorical variables
- Tetrachoric and Polychoric correlations for binary and ordinal variables
- One-way ANOVA

Who is it for?
The workshop is pitched at a level for students and professionals. No prior experience in R is necessary, though you should be familiar with working with data in some software and basic data analysis.
This workshop is for you if you:
- Wish to learn to use R, and want to expand your knowledge of data analysis and statistical modelling generally.
- Wish to develop skills in using R.
It is not for you if you:
- Are a complete beginner in statistics. You should already understand hypothesis testing, descriptive statistics, and basic data manipulation.
- Have used R extensively and are looking for advanced skills.
Prerequisites:
- You will get the most out of the workshop if you have some experience in data analysis and have taken introductory statistics.
The workshop is offered as an interactive, live online workshop + Membership Site
You’ll receive:
1. Live Webinar Presentation of Workshop material
David will hold the workshop live via webinar. You attend over the internet, and you will see what is happening on David’s computer screen. Audio is through either your computer speakers/microphone or by telephone.
You can ask questions out loud or write it into the chat, and you never have to leave your house or office.
2. Live Q&A Webinar
After you’ve had about a week to work through all the materials, you have the opportunity to meet David in two live Question & Answer webinars.
Bring your questions about the presentation or applying R to your own research.
We encourage you to attend the two Q&A sessions live, but if you have to miss the sessions, they will be recorded and made available within 48 hours on our workshop website. You can still get your questions answered by submitting a question and David will answer later.
We’ve also created a workshop site that you become a member of. For a year.
3. Private workshop website where you can submit questions and get all the workshop materials.
This private website is our home-base for the workshop. It’s where you’ll find everything you need to support your learning:
- Video Screenshot recordings of each workshop session made available within 48 hours. So you can review the material right away, months later, or while doing the exercises. Or if you need to miss one (or all!) of the live sessions, you can still participate on your own schedule.
- Data files. You get full access to use the data to try everything on your own.
- Handouts with all the R code which will be available ahead of each session, on which you can take notes.
- Exercises. (Yes, homework!). You really need to practice this stuff. Get your hands dirty. So we’re giving you the data to try it on your own with new models to try out. But don’t worry–you won’t be on your own stuck on some coding error that won’t work. You’ll get the code to do the exercises and the answers in case you get stuck.
- A place to submit written questions between sessions. So as you’re reviewing videos afterward (or if you missed a live session), just submit a question. David will answer it right there on the website.
- Video Recordings of all Q&A sessions. So if you have to miss one, just submit your questions ahead of time and David will answer in the Q&A. Just watch it later.
- Bonus videos
You’ll have access for a year to this workshop membership site. So as we add resources, re-record sessions, and answer more questions each time we offer the workshop, you have access to the updated material.
The Instructor:
David Lillis is a professional statistician and researcher. He holds a PhD from Curtin University in Western Australia.
He is owner and Director of Sigma Statistics and Research Limited, a New Zealand based company that provides coding services and training in statistical analysis and especially in R.
What Our Students Say About David’s Webinars:
"David was clear, knowledgeable, and responsive. Great handouts!"
- Anonymous
"For me, it was a good introduction to R, using simpler (well understood) statistical techniques that did not detract from the introduction to R."
- Martin Watts, PhD
It was great to see someone using R ‘live’ to see how it works.
- Cate Bailey
The explanation was very clear, the topics were useful.
- Jose Hernandez
"Great format, great presenter."
- Tom Bohon
"I am a new R user; It just gave me another motivation why I need to learn it further. Great work."
- Essam Alshreafi
"Learned more efficient ways to parse data and evaluate the contents of a given data set. Very nice stuff! Overall, I thought this webinar was very well done. It was informative and moved at a great pace."
- anon
"More on R from David would be great. His tips were wonderful."
- Gary Kitchen
